Define your offer
It’s tempting to offer everything when you’re starting a freelancer business, but it can lead to confusion, undercharging and clients who aren’t the right fit.
Instead of listing tasks, focus on the result you create. What problem do you solve? Who is it for? What changes after someone works with you? Start simple. You can expand later.
Your next move:
Write down everything you currently offer.
Circle the services you enjoy most and feel confident delivering.
Narrow it down to one core outcome. Finish this sentence: “I help ________ to ________.”
Focus your audience
Trying to appeal to everyone can lead to no one. Choosing a specific type of client doesn’t mean locking yourself into one niche forever, it simply gives you a focused starting point.
Think about who you understand best, where you already have experience, and who values what you do most. You can always expand later.
Your next move:
List three types of clients or industries you could realistically work with.
Keep the one you know you could confidently pitch tomorrow.
Then write this down: “My focus right now is working with ________.”
Price yourself properly
Now it’s time to put numbers behind your offer. Start by working out what you need to earn, then sense check it against the current market.
Research what others in your space are charging and position yourself realistically. Ideally you’ll price per project rather than per hour, but you still need a solid base rate to build from.
Use the Freelance Rates Calculator to work that out properly, factoring in tax, non billable time and the realities of running a business.
